Petronas twin towers are one of the main sights of Malaysia. Located in capital Kuala-Lumpur, they are the city’s landmark and the symbol of the nation’s economic prosperity and well-being – one could hardly call Malaysia a progressive country just 70 years ago.
The 451.9 meters tall buildings are the largest twin towers in the world, and they were the largest buildings in the world for six years until 2004.
The towers were designed by postmodernist César Pelli. Thanks to Malaysia PM Mahathir bin Mohamad, the design included some “Islamic” parts as well; they are present both in the exterior and in the framework of the buildings: the section of the towers looks like an eight-pointed star, known as rubʿ al-ḥizb – an Islam symbol made of two overlapping squares.
The towers were ordered by Petronas state company that spent a total of $800 mln on the construction. They are really huge – the total area of all offices at these 88 floors is 213,750 sq meters; it takes two months to wash all the 32,000 windows of these towers.
These skyscrapers have two-level elevators: the lower level of the elevator takes people to even floors, the upper level – to odd floors. Elevators move people between odd and even floors.
The towers are connected with a large hinged bridge: a fixed bridge would be impossible as both towers are always slightly rocking. One of the culminating scenes of the Entrapment movie with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones was shot on this bridge.
The twin towers became a vivid and widely recognizable symbol of Malaysia right from the start; this world famous sight still attracts people from across the globe.
